Extension: Advanced Learning

“Reading furnishes the mind only with materials of knowledge; it is thinking that makes what we read ours.” - John Locke

Why This Extension?

Phase 0 introduced learning fundamentals. This extension goes deeper into strategic reading and advanced learning techniques. Essential for getting the most out of this curriculum and becoming a lifelong learner.

Prerequisites: Phase 0 (Learn How to Learn)

Week 1: The Art of Reading

Core Concepts

Active Reading: Most people read passively - words go in, but ideas don’t stick. Active reading engages with the text, questions assumptions, and connects to existing knowledge.

The Four Levels of Reading: Elementary, inspectional, analytical, and syntopical. Each serves a different purpose.

Reading Speed vs. Comprehension: Speed reading is overrated. The goal is comprehension per hour, not pages per hour.

This Week’s Reading

📖 How to Read a Book by Mortimer Adler (Full book)

The Four Levels of Reading

LevelNamePurposeSpeed
1ElementaryBasic comprehensionVariable
2InspectionalQuick survey, what’s this about?Fast
3AnalyticalDeep understandingSlow
4SyntopicalCompare multiple books on same topicVariable

Inspectional Reading (Level 2)

For any book, first do a quick survey (15-30 minutes):

StepWhat to DoWhy
1Read title, subtitle, prefaceGet the author’s intention
2Study table of contentsSee the structure
3Check the indexSee key topics and how they’re treated
4Read dust jacket blurbsPublisher’s summary
5Read pivotal chaptersUsually intro and conclusion
6Thumb through, read paragraphsGet the rhythm and style

Outcome: Decide whether to read analytically, and know what you’re getting into.

Analytical Reading (Level 3)

For important books, read analytically:

StageQuestions to Answer
ClassifyWhat kind of book is this?
SummarizeWhat is the book about in one sentence?
OutlineWhat are the major parts and how do they connect?
ProblemsWhat problems is the author trying to solve?
TermsWhat are the key terms? How does the author define them?
PropositionsWhat are the author’s main claims?
ArgumentsHow does the author support the claims?
EvaluateHas the author solved the stated problems?

Syntopical Reading (Level 4)

For mastery of a topic, read multiple books together:

StepAction
1Create a bibliography of relevant books
2Inspect all to determine which are relevant
3Find the passages in each that relate to your questions
4Establish a neutral terminology
5Define the issues and questions
6Analyze the discussion across authors

Week 2: Optimizing Learning

Core Concepts

Desirable Difficulties: Learning techniques that slow down acquisition but improve long-term retention. The harder it feels, the better you’re learning.

Ultralearning Principles: Aggressive, self-directed learning strategies for rapid skill acquisition.

The Testing Effect: Testing yourself is not just assessment - it’s one of the most powerful learning techniques.

Capstone: Learning System Upgrade

Review and upgrade your learning system:

  1. Audit: How have you been learning so far in this curriculum?
  2. Gaps: Which evidence-based strategies are you missing?
  3. System Design: Create a revised learning system using:
    • Inspectional reading for new books
    • Analytical reading for key books
    • Retrieval practice schedule
    • Spaced repetition plan
  4. Implementation: Commit to specific practices

Reading Strategy Prompt

Help me apply the four levels of reading to a book.

Book: [title and author]
My purpose: [why I'm reading this]
Time available: [how much time I can invest]

Help me:
1. Do an inspectional survey (what should I look for?)
2. Decide if I should read analytically
3. If yes, create a reading plan with key questions
4. Suggest how to connect this to books I've already read

Learning Audit Prompt

Help me audit and upgrade my learning system.

What I'm currently studying: [describe your learning goals]
My current methods: [how you study now]
Challenges I'm facing: [what's not working]

Help me:
1. Evaluate my current methods against research
2. Identify the biggest gaps
3. Design a specific practice to address each gap
4. Create an implementation plan for the next 4 weeks

Syntopical Reading Prompt

Help me do syntopical reading on a topic.

Topic: [the subject you want to master]
Books I have access to: [list relevant books]
Questions I'm trying to answer: [your specific questions]

Help me:
1. Identify which books are most relevant
2. Find key chapters/passages across books
3. Create a neutral vocabulary for the topic
4. Map where authors agree and disagree
5. Synthesize my own perspective

Phase Assessment

Complete the following to demonstrate advanced learning competency:

  1. Quiz: Learning Science Concepts (30%)
  2. Reflection: Learning System Design (70%)
    • Document your upgraded learning system
    • Show evidence of applying new strategies
    • Reflect on what’s changed in your learning effectiveness

I'm studying Advanced Learning (Phase EXT-LEARNING of my MBA program).

Act as a Socratic tutor - don't give me direct answers. Instead, ask me questions to help me discover insights about these concepts: Advanced Learning Techniques, Strategic Reading.

Start by asking what I already know about one of these topics, then guide me deeper with follow-up questions. Challenge my assumptions when appropriate.

After each of my responses, either:
1. Ask a deeper follow-up question
2. Point out a gap in my reasoning
3. Connect my answer to another concept

Let's begin.

Quiz me on Advanced Learning. Ask 10 questions covering: Advanced Learning Techniques, Strategic Reading.

Rules:
- Mix question types (multiple choice, short answer, scenario-based)
- Start easier, get progressively harder
- After each answer, tell me if I'm right or wrong and explain why
- Keep a running score
- At the end, summarize what I know well vs. need to review

Ask the first question now.

Help me apply the main frameworks from this phase to a real situation in my life or work.

First, ask me to describe a recent challenge or decision I faced.

Then guide me through analyzing it using these frameworks:
- Which framework applies best?
- What would each framework reveal about the situation?
- What would I do differently knowing this?

Don't lecture - ask questions that help me discover the insights myself.

I want to practice case analysis for Advanced Learning.

Give me a short business scenario (2-3 paragraphs) involving Advanced Learning Techniques, Strategic Reading.

Then ask me:
1. What's the core problem?
2. Which frameworks from Advanced Learning apply?
3. What biases might cloud judgment here?
4. What would you recommend?

After each answer, push back on my reasoning before moving to the next question.

I'm studying Advanced Learning and need to understand these concepts deeply: Advanced Learning Techniques, Strategic Reading.

For each concept, ask me to explain it in simple terms (as if to a child).

If my explanation is unclear or wrong, don't correct me directly. Instead:
1. Ask clarifying questions
2. Give me a scenario that tests my understanding
3. Help me refine my explanation

The Feynman technique says if you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough.
