Phase 0: Learn How to Learn

“The ability to learn faster than your competitors may be the only sustainable competitive advantage.” - Arie de Geus

Why Start Here?

Before diving into leadership, strategy, and business concepts, we need to master the meta-skill of learning itself. Research shows that most people use ineffective study techniques (re-reading, highlighting) when evidence-based methods are 200%+ more effective.

This phase transforms you from a passive consumer of information into an active, strategic learner.

Week 1: The Science of Learning

Core Concepts

Retrieval Practice: The act of recalling information strengthens memory more than re-reading. Every time you retrieve knowledge, you reinforce the neural pathways.

Spaced Repetition: Distributing learning over time with increasing intervals leads to dramatically better long-term retention than massed practice (“cramming”).

Interleaving: Mixing different topics or problem types during practice improves transfer and generalization of knowledge.

This Week’s Reading

📖 Make It Stick by Brown, Roediger & McDaniel (Chapters 1-4)

Reflection Questions

  1. What learning techniques have you used in the past? Which were effective?
  2. How might spaced repetition change your approach to this MBA program?
  3. Design a simple experiment to test retrieval practice vs. re-reading.

Week 2: Deep Work & Focus

Core Concepts

Deep Work: Professional activities performed in a state of distraction-free concentration that push your cognitive capabilities to their limit.

Attention Residue: When you switch between tasks, your attention doesn’t immediately follow—a residue of your attention remains stuck on the original task.

Time Blocking: Scheduling specific blocks of time for specific types of work, protecting deep work from shallow interruptions.

Week 3: Your Learning System

Core Concepts

Second Brain: An external system for capturing, organizing, connecting, and expressing ideas—freeing your biological brain for creative thinking.

Active Recall: Actively stimulating memory during the learning process (vs. passive review).

Personal Knowledge Management: Systems for organizing information so it’s useful for future projects and connections.

This Week’s Reading

📖 Ultralearning by Scott Young (Selected chapters)

Capstone: Your Learning Plan

Create a personalized learning plan for this MBA program:

  1. Learning Environment: Where and when will you study?
  2. Spaced Repetition System: How will you review key concepts?
  3. Active Recall Methods: What techniques will you use?
  4. Progress Tracking: How will you measure learning outcomes?

Socratic Tutor Prompt

I'm starting Phase 0 (Learn How to Learn) of my MBA program.

Act as a Socratic tutor. Don't explain concepts directly. Instead, ask me questions that help me discover:
1. How do I currently study? What works, what doesn't?
2. What are my biggest learning challenges?
3. Why might spaced repetition be better than cramming?
4. How could I apply interleaving to my MBA studies?

Ask one question at a time. After I answer, ask follow-up questions to deepen my thinking before moving to the next concept.

Study Schedule Design

Help me design a study schedule for this MBA program using evidence-based learning science.

Ask me about:
1. My available study hours per week
2. My peak focus times
3. My biggest distractions
4. Whether I learn better alone or with others

Then help me create a schedule that incorporates:
- Spaced repetition intervals
- Deep work blocks
- Active recall sessions
- Interleaved practice

Don't give me a generic schedule - ask questions until you can create one personalized for me.

Learning Audit

I want to audit my current learning habits.

Ask me 10 diagnostic questions about:
- How I take notes
- How I review material
- How I test myself
- How I handle difficult concepts
- How I schedule study time

After each answer, rate my approach (1-10) and explain what research says about that technique's effectiveness.

At the end, prioritize which 3 habits I should change first.

Phase Assessment

Complete the following to demonstrate Phase 0 competency:

  1. Quiz: Learning Science Concepts (30%)
  2. Reflection: Personal Learning Plan (70%)
    • 500-word document outlining your learning system
    • Include specific techniques you’ll use
    • Define how you’ll measure progress

I'm studying Learn How to Learn (Phase 00 of my MBA program).

Act as a Socratic tutor - don't give me direct answers. Instead, ask me questions to help me discover insights about these concepts: Learning Agility, Metacognitive Awareness.

Start by asking what I already know about one of these topics, then guide me deeper with follow-up questions. Challenge my assumptions when appropriate.

After each of my responses, either:
1. Ask a deeper follow-up question
2. Point out a gap in my reasoning
3. Connect my answer to another concept

Let's begin.

Quiz me on Learn How to Learn. Ask 10 questions covering: Learning Agility, Metacognitive Awareness.

Rules:
- Mix question types (multiple choice, short answer, scenario-based)
- Start easier, get progressively harder
- After each answer, tell me if I'm right or wrong and explain why
- Keep a running score
- At the end, summarize what I know well vs. need to review

Ask the first question now.

Help me apply the main frameworks from this phase to a real situation in my life or work.

First, ask me to describe a recent challenge or decision I faced.

Then guide me through analyzing it using these frameworks:
- Which framework applies best?
- What would each framework reveal about the situation?
- What would I do differently knowing this?

Don't lecture - ask questions that help me discover the insights myself.

I want to practice case analysis for Learn How to Learn.

Give me a short business scenario (2-3 paragraphs) involving Learning Agility, Metacognitive Awareness.

Then ask me:
1. What's the core problem?
2. Which frameworks from Learn How to Learn apply?
3. What biases might cloud judgment here?
4. What would you recommend?

After each answer, push back on my reasoning before moving to the next question.

I'm studying Learn How to Learn and need to understand these concepts deeply: Learning Agility, Metacognitive Awareness.

For each concept, ask me to explain it in simple terms (as if to a child).

If my explanation is unclear or wrong, don't correct me directly. Instead:
1. Ask clarifying questions
2. Give me a scenario that tests my understanding
3. Help me refine my explanation

The Feynman technique says if you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough.
